Learning through my schema - Containing, Transporting and Connection
Children in the baby plus room at Daisykins explored their mathematical knowledge in the maths and numeracy corner. A variety of containers were out on display ready for the children to use as well as a tray full of different length dried spaghetti.
Along with the containers of all shapes and sizes the children had full use of many wooden spoons, spatulas and measuring spoons to allow them to explore their individual schemas such as containing, transporting and connection. The Children used their palmer and pincer grips and the tools to load the spaghetti in and out of the containers exploring the depths of the containers and how much could be placed into each one. The children further developed their own knowledge of shape and space by discovering whether the containers would fit inside each other and which lids would fit on which containers. The children were allowed to freely explore their surroundings with little interruption, giving a more rich and memorable learning experience as it followed what the children were interested and allowed them to make choice whilst discovering at the same time.
Similar experiences are always readily available for the children in the baby plus room as children often show particular schemas in their play and as research shows this is a crucial part of their learning and development.
