Children in Great Dais Pre School participated in a gardening experience led by practitioners Aileen and Fran. Great Dais have been learning all about growing and change as part of their current topic and this activity was to encourage the children to consider whether these vegetable would grow about or below the soil.
Previous activities have been completed where the children have observed beans growing in a jar so they could see the roots grows and the bean begin to shoot so already have some experience of planting and growing and this was an excellent extension activity. The vegetables they decided to plant were green beans, carrots, radish. The children were encouraged to use the tools in the correct way and to think about what would be needed to help the vegetables grow such as water and sun light. This activity promoted development in many areas such as physical, understanding of the world and personal, social and emotional skills. The children will be encouraged over the next few weeks to continue to care for and observe what happens to the vegetables as they grow, giving the children a sense of responsibility and accomplishment.
