Oh where has the woolly sheep gone?

The children from Daisykins Nursery in Rugby have been learning all about farm animals and to help teach them about woolly sheep a fun creative activity was set up for them.Shaving foam was placed on top of laminated sheep pictures to represent the sheep's wool. The children were given wooden spatulas and they pretended to sheer the sheep's wool using forward and backward movements with the spatula. This activity introduced the concept of cause and effect, the children were fascinated as they watched the shaving foam move to one side to reveal a sheep. High levels of involvement were demonstrated and children were thoroughly engaged in the activity. Practitioners supported the children and used open ended questions for example "Where has the sheep gone?.Children quickly identified the picture as a sheep and were saying "baa baa" Once the shaving foam was beginning to slowly disappear the children were asking for more.  Leading on from this activity the children sang Baa Baa wooly sheep during song time.Throughout the day at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby children engage in a vast amount of  fun messy activities this is an important part of the Early Years Foundation Stage as it enables them to learn about new textures whilst being introduced to new language and building on their social interaction with others.
