Pre-School Make Lemon Drizzle Cake for Macmillan Coffee Morning

The children in Pre-School at Daisykins Day Nursery in Rugby had lots of fun making lemon drizzle cake ahead of our Autumn Parent/Carer Macmillan Coffee Morning.

The children waited patiently as the practitioners lay the ingredients out onto the table. They were then invited to have a look at the ingredients and guess what they were going to bake. The closest guess, of "lemon sponge", won and therefore gave the child who answered the first turn at measuring the first ingredient and adding it to the bowl.

The children then took turns in measuring all ingredients out and adding them into the mixing bowl before then mixing them together. Not only does baking support children's mathematical skills as they measure out the ingredients, but it also enhances their physical development, encouraging them to practice their fine motor skills. During baking activities children also develop their communication and language skills as they learn to listen attentively to instructions given, understand what is asked of them and communicate with others.

It was then time to zest the lemon, which sparked great conversation about the importance of being careful, using the grater safely and being sensible when others are using it. The practitioners were incredibly proud of the children's impeccable behaviour through-out the activity, especially when zesting the lemon with the grater.

They added the lemon into their mixture and used their strong muscles to mix it together. The children then waited patiently for their turn to pour the mixture into the cake tin.

After all that hard work it was time for the cake to go into the oven to cook which meant the children could wash their hands and head outside to play. We hope they were pleased with their finished result!
