Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Look How Clever We All Are!

"1, 2, 3, 4, We are learning lots more!"

Singing nursery rhymes and traditional lullabies to children who are not yet talking, or have a limited vocabulary, is extremely beneficial to their communication and language skills. In our Baby and Toddler Rooms at Daisykins Day Nursery in Rugby, we are particularly keen to incorporate singing into the children's daily activities, often using familiar songs as a stimulus for their learning. In Toddler Room, the practitioners enhance the children's singing time by providing visual props to aid their understanding of each song and to encourage all children to join in.[ngg src="galleries" ids="257" display="basic_slideshow"]One of their firm favourites at singing time is 'Five Currant Buns', a well-known nursery rhyme that incorporates numbers, the use of money and encourages children to wait patiently and take turns. Kirsty, one of our brilliant practitioners, used 5 knitted currant buns and 5 1p coins, encouraging the children to demonstrate our nursery rules as they awaited their turn. The children all joined in singing this children's classic and the practitioners selected each child to purchase a currant bun, give the bakery shopkeeper their 1p and return to their space on the carpet. In between each line of the song, Kirsty asked the children how many currant buns were left, pointing to each one as they counted aloud together. The children thoroughly enjoyed singing this song, asking to sing it again.[ngg src="galleries" ids="258" display="basic_slideshow"]Another hit in Toddler Room is the upbeat '10 Fat Sausages', also focusing on the children's mathematical skills. The children loved singing this classic nursery rhyme, in particular enjoying the use of the knitted sausages, the laminated sausage pictures and the frying pan. The practitioners encouraged the children to participate through-out the activity, inviting them to count the sausages in the frying pan, take one of the sausages away or make the 'POP!' and 'BANG!' noises. The children also tried to imitate the practitioners as they held up the correct amount of fingers to show how many sausages were left in the frying pan.Click here to watch the children in Toddler Room singing '10 Fat Sausages'
