Winter crafts ideas for children
As the winter season has approached, children at nursery are joining in fun winter art activities. According to the Early Years Foundation Stage its about allowing children the opportunities to explore materials it's not necessarily about making an end product, taking this into consideration practitioners at daisykins nursery planned an art activity that was also a sensory experience.Winter collagePVA glue was mixed with shaving foam to create a thick gooey consistency, in front of the children were a range of collage materials such as shiny snowflakes, blue sand , pieces of blue materials for them to choose from. To begin with the children were fascinated by the gooey consistency, they watched it drip onto their paper and then they slowly began spreading it. Some of the children were less reluctant to touch the gooey especially as they didn't like the feel of it on their hands, whereas others happily dipped their fingers into the pot. As the children were choosing their collage pieces simple but effective language was used to help extend the children's vocabulary. The children displayed high levels of involvement and were eager to sprinkle lots of blue sand over their pictures. Once the picture was finished it was placed to dry and then it was to form part of a display in the room. Making snowmanPractitioner Emma helped the children to make a snowman, children placed their eyes, nose and mouth exactly where they wanted them to go, to them this is how they wanted their snowman to look. Allowing children the opportunity to independently construct their own interpretation of images is highly important in their development, as not all snowmen for example are the same and children learn to understand this by drawing or making their own image. Practitioner Emma praised the children and talked to them about the features of their snowman, the children make the connection between their eyes and the snowman's eyes.
