Using The Outdoor Climbing Apparatus

Outdoor play at Daisykins @ Rugby Free Nursery

The children at Daisykins @ Rugby Free Nursery are fortunate enough to be able to share some of the schools spaces and equipment. One area they particularly enjoy using is the outdoor climbing apparatus. This supports children’s entitlement to risky and challenging play giving them the opportunity to develop problem solving skills. Risky and challenging play is important as it gives children the freedom they need to learn important life skills such as risk assessing and learning their own capabilities.

Although this type of play is risky and challenging for the children it is risk assessed and safe for the children to take part in. A lot of the equipment they use may be found in your local Rugby parks and is great for the children’s physical skills.

The children enjoyed climbing and balancing along the various apparatus such as the netted climbing wall and up the ladders developing hand eye coordination and motor skills. The children had so much fun working together to help one another across the tightrope and taking turns. They showed real determination and sportsmanship cheering one another along and trying and trying again.

They used their imaginations and created their own games as they played gaining vital communication and social skills. Outdoor play enables children to have the freedom they need to communicate in different ways and to explore imaginative play that would perhaps be limited inside.

Even in the cold and wet weather the children at Daisykins @ Rugby Free Nursery still make full use of the outdoor space and facilities available to them. The changing weather presents children with the opportunity to learn more about the world around them, connect with nature and risk assess and problem solves in new ways.

We always ask that parents ensure their children are dressed appropriately for the weather as the children will always be outside. This may be by bringing a winter coat and wellies to nursery or a sunhat and suncream. Whatever the weather the children have a blast.
