Celebrating Diwali at Daisykins Whitehall

Throughout the nursery at Daisykins Whitehall children have been doing activities to celebrate Diwali. The practitioners and children talked about how Diwali was a five day festival of light and that it is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.

 

Children in Pre-school have been learning about the Hindu religion and practitioners explained to them what Diwali was. They then listened to a couple of stories about it and were given the opportunity to decorate their own Diwali princesses. Practitioners also encouraged the children to make their own Henna designs by gluing and sticking different coloured pieces of paper to make a pattern. 

 

In our Pre-School Minors room practitioners helped the children to draw around their own hands and then encouraged them to decorate them with their own designs using different coloured pens. They have also been making their own candles out of paper plates and different shaped pieces of paper.

The children in toddlers decorated their own Rangoli patterns, using bright pieces of paper and coloured pens to create their own pieces of artwork. They used glue spreaders to spread the glue and also stuck on sequins using their hand eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. 

 

Our babies even took part in the celebrations as well, using the dabber pens to decorate pieces of paper. Practitioners also encouraged them to do some finger painting to create their own string lights.

 

Here at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby we celebrate all different cultural festivals and encourage the children to learn about different religions and celebrations that are important to them. Throughout these activities children were encouraged to make there own choices about what they wanted to decorate and what colours they wanted to use. They also shared the different resources and took it in turns to use the different glue spreaders and dabbers, etc
