Developing children's mark making skills
Activity to support children's mark making skills
Instead of giving the children paper to paint on they were given sand paper. Children were very intrigued in the noise that was mad when they ran ther fingers over the sand paper. One child said it sounds "Scratchy".The children happily dipped their paintbrushes in the different coloured paint and made various marks on the sand paper. After a short period of time children realised that they could paint their hands and make handprint patterns. Practitioners talked to the children during the activity and used effective communication strategies especially as some of these childen are still at the stage of babbling.Painting is not the only mark marking activity that children are offfered at nursery. Sand play, gloop and shaving foam are just some of the activities children get to practice their mark marking skills. Why not try this activity at home with your little ones.
