Healthy Eating at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby

Encouraging children to eat a range of healthy food

Healthy eating has become a big priority here at our Nursery in Rugby and our menus have been completely reworked to ensure every child receives healthy meals whilst in the care of Daisykins. All of our snacks and meals are freshly prepared on site each and every day by one or two of our in-house cooks.

Breakfast for the children is a variety of healthy cereals or toast, or if the children are feeling really hungry both. The children in our Rugby Preschool are able to serve themselves cereals which is very important for us to create children who are confident and independent. Lunches are home cooked hot meals such as lasagna, fish pie, Somerset pork, green beans and rice, vegetable curry or macaroni cheese, followed by puddings such as peach crumble, cakes, tarts or fruit salads. The meals here at Daisykins are all adapted to meet any individual needs or stages of weaning. Again our Preschool children are able to self serve lunches which as mentioned is an important skill we teach.

This is important for not only creating independence and school readiness but also in promoting healthy eating. It helps to teach portion control and gives an opportunity for the children to actually talk about what they are being offered and eating. Snacks are offered twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Snacks may be a variety of different things such as fruits, vegetable sticks and rice cakes. Dinner in the evening will be either a hot or cold meal and are much lighter than lunch and includes things such as beans on toast, ham and tomato toasties or jacket potatoes. Children have access to fresh water all day and are offered a drink of milk or water at snack times.

All of the practitioners at our Rugby Nursery hold food hygiene certificates and use this knowledge to ensure top hygiene is used whenever food is being served and eaten. The children all eat in dining areas, which are cleaned and tidied before and after every meal and snack time.
