National Science Week In Pre-School At Daisykins

The children have been exploring science at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby as part of National Science Week. The Practitioners in Pre-School have provided a range of activities for the children to take part in and explore.Practitioners planned activities that would help the children explore using their five different senses. One of these activities involved a practitioner creating some smelly paints for the children to paint with. They encouraged them to describe and identify what they could smell and then make their own pictures using them. The scents included banana, cinnamon, mixed spice, strawberry and vanilla. To explore their sense of taste the children were given lemon, lime, dark chocolate, cucumber, milk chocolate and strawberries to try and then talk about what they thought they tasted like. Comments included, "It's sweet!", "That's one's bitter" and "Ooooo it's sour!"[ngg_images source="galleries" container_ids="204" sortorder="1530,1531,1532,1534,1543,1535,1544,1542,1537,1539,1529,1540,1538,1545,1533,1541,1536" display_type="photocrati-nextgen_basic_slideshow" gallery_width="600" gallery_height="400" cycle_effect="fade" cycle_interval="3" show_thumbnail_link="0" thumbnail_link_text="[Show picture list]" order_by="sortorder" order_direction="ASC" returns="included" maximum_entity_count="500"]Another experiment was set up in the garden for the children to take part in. They used pipets to add their choice of food colouring and vinegar to a cup of baking powder and then watched a reaction take place. The mixture fizzed and created some bubbles. The children sang the "Bubble, bubble, pop" song and one child exclaimed "It's getting bigger and bigger!"To explore how colours can change a practitioner encouraged the children to add food colouring of the primary colours to six cups of water. They then draped kitchen roll into two of the cups and the children watched what was happening. After the kitchen paper had absorbed the water the children were encouraged to squeeze out the water into a third cup and see what had happened - it had made three secondary colours! Another experiment involved placing skittles in a circle on a plate and then drizzling water over them. The children were amazed to see a rainbow of colours appear! Here at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby practitioners strive to continually provide activities that will fascinate the children and encourage them to explore different aspects of the world around them.
