Our New Outdoor Construction Area
In our outdoor area at Daisykins Nursery in Rugby we have developed a construction area using different natural resources. It has been designed so that children can create there own constructions and take part in some risky play.
The different resources we have used include tyres, decking boards, crates and guttering. The children are encouraged to build their own obstacle courses, assessing their own risks (in a controlled environment) and then support each other in completing the course.
The children in Pre-School have especially enjoyed exploring this area, working together to use the decking boards and tyres to make ramps to walk along. They helped each other to balance on the boards, holding on to each other (and a practitioner who got very tangled up!) to walk from one side of the course to the other.

In this area we also have a sandpit for the children to play in, especially the younger ones, enabling them to make their own constructions out of the sand using buckets, spades, diggers and other construction vehicles. We have also displayed lots of construction images and key words for the children to talk about and learn. We hope that this area will encourage the children's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning and support/enable them in these areas of development.
If you have any suggestions or any resources that you would like to donate to add to this new area please do not hesitate to contact us at Daisykins Whitehall.
