Posting letters

The children in Baby plus had brilliant fun and spent a lot of time concentrating hard posting letters into the post box. As soon as the post box was brought out it created immediate fascination for the children and has become a firm favourite toy for the week. This toy was introduced into the room as part of a topic exploring and experimenting colour. The post box contains coloured letters and envelopes, the children are encouraged to place the letters into the envelopes which are the same colour are then post them into the post box. Practitioners support the children by talking about the colours and whether they are the ‘same’ or ‘different’. This activity allowed children to develop their mathematical skills of categorising objects and hand eye coordination. It is particularly effective for the children as it allows them to explore certain patterns of behaviour know as schemas. Schemas are how some children make sense of the world and develop pathways in brain. The post box activity allows the children to explore a schema known as containing. This is where children enjoying filling and emptying containers or placing things in and out of objects for example placing the letter inside the envelop and then post them inside the letter box.
