Pre School's bread creations
A group of children from the Great Dais Pre-school recently visited Malt Kiln farm, they were extremely excited as they had the chance to explore the farm shop looking at all the different fruits, vegetables, meats and home-made condiments. After being greeted by the master baker Maurice, the children were taken to part of the Farm shop to look at an old working tractor. Maurice explained to the children what the tractor had done back when it used to work and how it helped them in the bread making process. During this talk, the children were able to take turns sitting on the tractor and enjoy what it felt like to be in the farmer’s seat. The Pre-school children also all had the opportunity to experience an afternoon of being bakers. Receiving expert advice on how to make the tastiest bread from Revel Baker, Maurice Hartnett, the Pre-school children were engrossed by the baking process and could not wait to get stuck in. He allowed the children to taste the salt that goes into the bread, feel the type of flour he uses and smell the yeast, the key ingredient that one of the children said, “smells like puppies”. Maurice’s philosophy that his bread is made “Healthy, simple and above all delicious” was incredibly accurate, as he openly shared his bread making secrets and let the children and Daisykins staff try some of his baking experiments, the plumb bread being the favourite and most memorable. The children then went on to make bread Hedgehogs, they were given two different types of bread, white and brown, and were told what the difference was between them and which one was the healthiest. After showing the children how to create their Hedgehogs, Maurice gave the children another piece of dough to shape into whatever they wanted. Some of these shapes included dogs, cats, mice, bread men and even dinosaurs! They looked amazing! Whilst the bread Hedgehogs were baking in their giant ovens, the children were allowed to go outside to look at the farmland and the real working tractor that was in the opposite field.Maurice then ended the baking experience by presenting the children with their bread creations; they were so excited to see how their creations turned out and wanted to eat them straight away. Maurice then thanked us for coming and taking part, he also invited us to come back at anytime we wanted to have another afternoon of baking.Malt Kiln Farm and their bakery was an enjoyable and educational experience, giving children the chance to learn about real food and where it comes from. We, at Daisykins, would recommend Malt Kiln Farm to parents and children of all ages, as their informative approach to healthy natural food is inspiring and would make anyone want to eat home-made healthy food every day.Revel Bakery: http://www.revelbakery.co.uk/Malt Kiln Farm: http://www.maltkilnfarmshop.co.uk/
