Learning More About The Fire Service

The Pre School children learn about the role of a fire fighter

The children in Pre-School have been continuing to explore their current ‘People Who Help Us’ theme and have taken a closer look at the fire service this past week. The children have learnt about the role of a firefighter, what they have to wear, the equipment they have to use, what their job involves and the many ways of how they help the community.

The children headed to the focused learning room ready for group time in which they discussed any knowledge they already had of the fire service, before reading the story of ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. They then engaged in a plenary discussion, talking about what they had learnt when listening to the story, with every child eagerly sharing a fact about firefighters that they did not previously know. The children showed increasing attention throughout the story and re-called the story well in their play later on that day. Pre-School’s role-play area saw a revamp from a police station to a fire station and the children could not wait to play in it!

They waited patiently for their turn, allowing their friends to access the role-play area too. The children took on the role of firefighters and wore the dressing up clothes, with one child holding a torch as a “fire blaster”. The children’s imagination ran wild and they had such a fantastic time playing in their newly refurbished role-play area.

The children imagined there was a fire nearby and they rang the fire station explaining there was a fire. The children playing within the fire station reacted to this and set off on their fire engine to put the fire out.
