Pre School Children Visited Local Care Home

Singing Christmas Carols with the Residents from Granville Care Home

Children from Daisykins Nursery visited a local care home that is just 5 minutes from the nursery. Granville Care Home contacted the nursery a few months ago asking if the children would like to visit the residents and sing them some Christmas songs. The offer was welcomed and the children started practising the festive songs that they wished to sing.

The children grouped around the tree and sang lots of Christmas songs to the residents. One resident took off his headphones to listen to the children singing. Natalie, our SENDCO. used Makaton signing throughout each song. The residents clapped at the end of each festive song and waited with anticipation for the next. Natalie asked the children what other songs they wanted to sing and of course, the majority said 'Baby Shark'.

The children were welcomed at the door by the friendly care home staff and were led into the lounge where the residents were waiting. The children were very quiet and shy at first but after being introduced to the residents they found their voices. The children brought presents with them to give to the residents and two of the Pre-School practitioners, Sophie and Natalie, walked around with the children to hand them out. The children were asked by the residents if they wanted to help them unwrap the presents and they excitedly offered their help.  The children were informed it was one of the residents birthday, so to celebrate they sang 'Happy Birthday' to her.

The visit to Granville Care home was a magical moment and it was clear to see that both generations benefited from spending time together. It was evident that the children loved listening to stories being told by the elderly and we soon found out that the residents at Granville Care Home had lots to tell.

Nursery Manager, Kelly said, "It was beautiful to watch the relationship between the residents and children evolve over such a short period of time".

The children will be visiting the Care Home regularly to build on relationships they have started to develop and to enjoy one anothers company.
