“Carrot Club”

Children at Daisykins@Rugby Free Nursery learn about equality

Sophie, our Deputy Manager at Daisykins@Rugby Free Nursery, downloaded an ebook for the Preschool practitioners to read to the children. The story “Carrot Club” is about some vegetables feeling left out as they are not allowed to join the secret “Carrot Club”, however the parsnip has a idea that might teach the carrots a lesson.

The children sat and listened to Chloe, our Head of Preschool read the story. During the story lots of discussions took place, focusing on questions about how the vegetables may be feeling and why this might be. Chloe explained to the children that the parsnip was always a white colour however he had just tricked the carrots by making himself all orange.

This story helped the children to understand that people must not judge others by what they look like and that everyone should be treated the same.

To extend this story further, activities were planned for the children to join in. The role play area was changed into a juice bar where children freely made their own drinks. Over on the playdough table, the children made various vegetables out of playdough and the practitioners talked to them about which was bigger and which was smaller, introducing simple maths concepts into the children's play.

One of the children's favourite activities was making fruit smoothies. These were very popular with the children, with some children asking if they could make some more. The children chose which fruits they wanted in their smoothie and sat around the table with their friends to enjoy their smoothie. “Yum Yum!”

Introducing the “Carrot Club” story into Preschool also enabled the children to think positively about vegetables and eating healthy.
